It is Well With My Soul (When Peace Like a River)
By Spafford & Bliss. 19th Century Hymn arranged for String Quartet by Hugh Levey
This stirring hymn was written by Horatio Spafford in 1873, after suffering the loss of his four daughters at sea on the ship Ville du Havre. Its resolute chorus "It is Well With My Soul" is a strong proclamation of faith despite personal tragedy.
The hymn was first published in 1876, set to a tune by Philip Bliss which is still known as
Ville du Havre. It exists in versions with either 4 or 5 verses. This arrangement for string
quartet consists of 5 verses, each with slightly altered harmonisation or articulation, to
suit the words. For example in verse 3 the words "Nailed to the Cross" are accompanied
by accented stabbing chords. Verse 5 has some trumpet-like fanfares to match the
reference to the "Trump[et] Calls” in the text. The words are shown in the score and in the 1st viloin part.
